FUSION FAQ

Q: Does FUSION require the EMPLANT hardware?

No. FUSION will work with the EMPLANT hardware if it is present, but it is not required. FUSION can also use the AMAX II+/IV hardware if present.

Q: Will FUSION work with my existing EMPLANT (v5.5, MACPRO, MACLITE, or MAC1200) hard drive and hardfile partitions?

Yes. The only exception to this is if you have changed the ROM type or CPU type between switching from a previous EMPLANT based emulation to FUSION.

Q: Will FUSION work with other MAC emulation hard drive or hardfile partitions?

Yes and no. It is unlikely that you will be able to successfully boot from a partition created under another Macintosh emulator (you can't exchange boot drives amongst real Macintoshes either). You can use the data contained on the drive once booted from another source. You could also immediately re-install the System software using FUSION before attempting to boot from the partition with FUSION.

Q: What size ROM do you recommend for FUSION, and why?

We recommend 512K ROMs over 256K and 1meg ROMs. The 512K ROMs were designed for the 68030 and older processors. 1meg ROMs were designed for the 68040 Macintoshes. We allow the use of 040 processors with all ROMs. This required a lot of clean up of the ROM code, and apparently our cleanup is better than what Apple did with the 1meg ROMs because the speed of the emulation is noticibly faster when using 512K ROMs. 1meg ROMs and 512K ROMs both identify themselves as ROM ID:$067C. Contrary to popular belief, there are no applications known that require 1meg ROMs. Apple's Quadra (1meg) ROMs are nothing more than the 512K ROMs with a few extra resources (RAM disk driver, Ethernet, etc.) built-in, and more than 300K worth of pictures of Apple's engineers.

Q: When I boot from the INSTALL 1 disk when attempting to install my system software, the installer can not see my partition.. why?

This has to be the most often asked question! Take a few minutes and read the manuals that came with the system software that you purchased. You will find that the installer does not have the ability to use partitions that have not yet been formatted under MacDOS. You must FIRST boot from the DISK TOOLS disk. Once the Macintosh desktop appears, you will be presented with a dialog box (requestor) asking to initialize (format) your partition. Do it! Now, if you boot from the INSTALL 1 disk, you will be able to select the partition and proceed with installing the system software.

Q: What is the proper procedure for re-installing my Macintosh system software?

Here is the procedure... please follow this exactly!:

Go to a SHELL or CLI and type:

DELETE FUSION:PRAMxxx.config

(where the xxx is the size of the ROM you are using)

Start the emulation and boot from the Apple system software disk labled DISK TOOLS.

Once the Macintosh's desktop appears, open the SYSTEM folder (located on your boot partition).

Drag the files 'SYSTEM' and 'FINDER' (and anything labled 'UPDATE') to the trash can.

From the pull-down menu, select EMPTY TRASH. This will delete the files in your trash can.

From the pull-down menu, select SHUTDOWN.

Start the emulation and boot from the Apple system software disk labled INSTALL 1.

Once the installer is up, select the proper drive where you want the system software installed.

Select CUSTOM INSTALL (not EASY INSTALL!)

Select ALL MAC MODELS (open the triangle gadget if necessary to view choices).

Proceed with the on-screen installation instructions provided by the installer program.

Q: How much virtual memory can be selected with FUSION?

You can select up to 767mb of virtual memory.

Q: My machine constantly reboots with my Derringer 030, why?

The Derringer uses some unique software to setup its memory (because it does not autoconfig). You can NOT use the following commands with the 'D3' program: -DROM and -RES. The line using D3 in your s:startup-sequence should look like this:

D3 -dram -mv -ms

The -DROM option remaps KickStart into FAST RAM. If you want to do this, use the ROM REMAP option in FUSION (set it to NORMAL). The -RES is the resident kicktag installation. Although -RES should work with RsrvCold (it does not work with EMPLANT's RsrvMem), there really is no need for this option.

Q: When I boot from the DISK TOOLS disk, part way through the booting, the 'Welcome to Macintosh' box starts flashing and the emulation sits there. Why?

This is very common! You are trying to use a set of install disks that were designed for a particular Mac model. These disks will NOT work on the emulation, or any other real Macintosh. You MUST be using the System 7.x Personal Upgrade Kit. This is the only version of the Mac system software that will work on ALL Macs.

Q: The information for FUSION states that it supports the Catweasel disk drive enhancement, but I can't figure out how to use it!

The Catweasel software has DOSDrivers included with it for various disk formats. You will need to mount the DOSDriver for reading/writing high density PC/MAC disks. You need to select the name of the DOSDriver in the DEVICES menu of FUSION. Remember, the order of the device selections is the boot order of the Mac system. So, if you want to boot from the Catweasel drive before a hard drive boots, you need to make sure it is the first selected device in the DEVICES menu.

Q: I have the Cybergraphics software installed, I installed ALL of the video drivers, but I can't select a Cybergraphics driver! Why?

The Cybergraphics support requires the 'cgxsystem.library'. This file is part of the 3.x Cybergraphics support. Technically, you should be using the entire 3.x upgrade, however, you can just install this file and use the older 2.x Cybergraphics software. Please note: there will be some QuickDraw acceleration problems with the older 2.x Cybergraphics software, so you might want to upgrade.
