LAUDRUP KEEN TO GO OUT WITH A BANG
Rangers' Great Dane Putting
Cash Row Aside For Final Fling

BRIAN LAUDRUP is rarely stopped in his tracks, but ask him about his future and the Danish striker displays rarely-seen defensive qualities. After tomorrow's Scottish Cup Final against Hearts, Laudrup is leaving Ibrox, but his move to Chelsea no longer looks assured despite a pre-contract agreement with the club.
The problem is that Rangers are now insisting that they should receive a transfer fee of several million pounds for a player who understood he could move for free and is clearly fed-up with the situation. When pressed on his future, he said only: ''Right now I'm only interested in the Cup final. I'm only focused on that.
Two years ago, Laudrup was instrumental in Rangers' 5-1 success over Hearts to lift the same trophy, but he rates his side's prospects this year as no better than 50-50. He explained: ''Hearts are a much stronger team now than they were then, and a lot of things went our way last time.''
Among those was the Dane's innocuous cross-shot that somehow eluded goalkeeper Gilles Rousset to give Rangers a 2-0 lead. Laudrup offered words of consolation then and, with the two facing one another again tomorrow, reiterated that message: ''It was very disappointing for Rousset, but, as I said then, throughout the season he had been outstanding. Unfortunately for him, he made a big mistake. The match is a special memory for me, but it must be remembered this was all two years ago.
Laudrup is determined his dispute with the deposed Scottish champions won't detract from more immediate business at Celtic Park today. This will be my final game as a Rangers player after four wonderful years, and I want to enjoy it,'' he added. ''All I want to do is end the relationship the best way possible, and that means winning the Cup. It might be tremendous to play in a final, but only as a winner.
HIS Rangers team-mate Ian Durrant looks poised to end an injury-blighted 13-year Ibrox career by benefiting from another's misfortune. It is an ironic twist in the final chapter of Durrant's story that he could start against Hearts because of Jonas Thern's hamstring problem.
The Swede joins suspended German Jorg Albertz on the sidelines, meaning Durrant is certain to be among the Rangers' 14 and could well be in the line-up from the start. He has made it clear that this summer will see the end his long association with the club he grew up supporting from the terraces and succeeded in starring for on the pitch.
He would have been an even brighter talent had it not been for the fateful afternoon of October 8, 1988 at Pittodrie when he sustained serious knee ligament damage. After 30 months out he finally returned but, understandably, was never quite the same player. He said: "It is unfortunate what has happened to Jorg and Jonas, but it has changed the way I'm approaching this final. A few weeks back, I was really looking at a place in the squad, now there is a real chance of being involved. I want my final days with Rangers to be special and I admit there is a strong feeling of regret it is almost over."
The former Scotland international is in talks with Japanese club Hiroshima Sanfrecce about the prospect of a one-year playing deal, but has a trophy to win first.

ROUSSET HOPING TO
FORGET HAMPDEN HORROR

ONE MAN has more reason than most to hope for a Hearts victory today. Two years ago, goalkeeper Gilles Rousset suffered the worst day of his footballing career in a Hampden final, also against Rangers.
On that occasion, the Gers romped home 5-1 with Rousset guilty of a schoolboy error which gifted the second goal to Brian Laudrup. ''I was crying in the dressing room after the game when John Robertson came up to me and told me I shouldn't worry, he said. "Everyone at the club was so good to me. Their encouragement helped me through that summer and restored my confidence at a difficult time. We suffered that day from the lack of depth in the squad but the manager has brought in some very good players since then.
''I feel we are much stronger this time and it is a tremendous achievement to qualify for another Cup final. We know Rangers will be favourites to win again but hopefully this time we will come out on top.''
Rousset will be joined in the Hearts side by fellow Frenchman Stephane Adam, who celebrated signing for the Edinburgh club by watching his new teammates beat Rangers on the final day of last season. And the striker, a free transfer recruit from Metz, would settle for the same result this time.
Adam has been a revelation in his first season at Tynecastle, scoring twice in the semi-final to bring down First Division battlers Falkirk at Ibrox, and loves the family atmosphere at the club. ''Everyone has been very friendly towards me, '' he said. I have had no trouble settling in as the team spirit is brilliant. We've had a good season and Cup finals are always special days. I have appeared in two finals in France and they are occasions to savour and enjoy.''
Also hoping to enjoy the day is 22-year-old striker James Hamilton, who is sweating on his place in the line-up after missing the last three league games through suspension. His 15 goals this season seem certain to earn him a spot in the team, but he admitted: The other lads have been winding me up about missing the final, but I'm hopeful I've done enough to merit a place in the starting 11 again. This has been my first full season in the Premier Division and with 15 goals, which is my best tally, I feel career-wise I'm ahead of schedule.
