I'll probably fix the problem in the program itself. Using root.mail
has the disadvantage that it won't work from the command line (pop3d
can be used from the command line) and the program will always run under
this gid. Anyway, I'll fix it this weekend.

No, that's not the purpose of the postinst file :).

The in.pop3d server fails to open a user's maildrop.
strace shows a setuid to <pop-uid> just before a failing attempt to create a
temporary file in /var/spool/mail.
Quick fix: edit inetd.conf to run in.pop3d as root.mail
netstd.postinst should at least warn about this incompatibility
