The in.pop3d server fails to open a user's maildrop.
strace shows a setuid to <pop-uid> just before a failing attempt to create a
temporary file in /var/spool/mail.

Quick fix: edit inetd.conf to run in.pop3d as root.mail

netstd.postinst should at least warn about this incompatibility
