Package: sysvinit
Version: 2.57b
Debian_Version: 0

debian.README: primary FTP site for the source is not mentioned.

init.d/README: Thanks for it, but please move it to /usr/doc/..

/etc/inet.d/functions: has mode 644; should 755?

There is no info, how to update from a prior version--or is it secure
simply to do `dpkg -r sysvinit' and then `dpkg -i sysvinit-2.57b-0.deb'?

BTW, I've installed the base system and some additional packages, but I'm
still missing `last'.

Best whishes, Karl.

We have some reasons to remove this file, as start-stop-daemon provides a
better replacement for the functions in it. For now, I think this is only
used with the "." (source) command, and it will work fine when mode 644.

> There is no info, how to update from a prior version

Don't try to remove the old package first. Make sure you are running an
up-to-date version of dpkg - at least 0.93.70, and then just install the new
package with "dpkg -i <file>" .

I think "last" is in its own package, probably under the "text" subdirectory.
The base system includes "more".

	Thanks

The standard way to upgrade any Debian package is simply to use dpkg
--install to install the new version. The old one will be cleaned up
automatically.

Do not attempt to remove the sysvinit package with dpkg -r. If you're
lucky dpkg will refuse; if you're unlucky your system will probably be
screwed.

As I wrote earlier:
] There is little reason for files in /etc/init.d to use the `functions'
] file. The file `functions' on my system contains
]
] * code to set PREVLEVEL and RUNLEVEL based on the output of the
] `runlevel' command. The only scripts in /etc/init.d that use it are
] `rc' and `powerfail' - arguably this could be done by using `runlevel'
] directly in those scripts.
]
] * shell functions `daemon' and `stop' that do a half-baked version of
] `start-stop-daemon'.  Scripts should use `start-stop-daemon' instead;
] the `daemon' and `stop' functions are not reliable. There are no
] scripts in my /etc/init.d directory that use `daemon' or `stop'.
]
] I suggest that the file `functions' be removed.

Ian.

No. I don't look for the pager, but for the tool which reads utmp/wtmp
and displays the last LOGINs. The last from sysvinit does this duty,
you don't install it, obviously for reasons, since it is intentionally
commented (`#') in the Makefile.

Best whishes, Karl.

The PPP package has /etc/ppp/README which is a symlink to a file in
/usr/doc. Perhaps that's the way to go for init as well?

    Richard> The PPP package has /etc/ppp/README which is a symlink to a
    Richard> file in /usr/doc.

I consider those links as a bad idea.  dpkg provides the -L switch;
voila, there's all you need:

# dpkg -L sysvinit | egrep 'doc|README'
/etc/init.d/README
/usr/doc
/usr/doc/copyright
/usr/doc/copyright/sysvinit

README files have to go to /usr/doc/... .
