PREMIERSHIP NEWS ROUND-UP
The Latest Stories From Around The Clubs
ARSENAL
The Gunners double-winning midfielders Emmanuel Petit and Patrick Vieira could miss out on a place at the World Cup despite having sensational seasons for Arsenal.
Petit has been in and out of the France squad all season and Vieira has only been on the fringes, as France coach Aime Jacquet is spolit for choice in central midfield: his preferred central midfield are tonight's European Cup opponents, Juventus star Didier Deschamps and Christian Karembeu of Real Madrid, with Zinedine Zidane in a floating role ahead of them. Sampdoria's Alain Boghossian is next in line, so Petit and Vieira may have their fingers crossed that someone gets injured in Amsterdam tonight.
''I've had my final 22 in my head for some time and there's no way a sudden flash will change it,'' Jacquet said at the French federation training centre at Clairefontaine.
Arsenal team-mate Nicolas Anelka looks more likely to make the squad after impressing in his recent call-up and Chelsea's Franck Leboeuf should be a reserve centre-back.
ASTON VILLA
Julian Joachim has turned down the offer of a new five-year contract at Aston Villa. The 23-year-old striker, whose good form alongside Dwight Yorke helped Villa qualify for the UEFA Cup this season, says he and the club "are not close at all" following negotiations over a new deal.
"They have made an initial offer which is not good enough," he said. "For the length of time that they want me to sign, everything has to be right."
Joachim's form saw £7m star Stan Collymore and Yugoslav striker Savo Milosevic left on the substitutes' bench and Milosevic recently sold to Real Zaragoza. Villa boss John Gregory is hopeful that the player can be tied down to a new contract.
"Julian is a very exciting prospect for my coaching staff," said Gregory. "He caught Savo up at the end of last season and he remains a player of fantastic promise."
BLACKBURN ROVERS
Rovers are having talks with Gillingham's £1 m-rated winger Jimmy Corbett but they face stiff competition for his signature with Aston Villa, Spurs, West Ham and Wimbledon all chasing the 17-year-old shooting star.
Corbett is expected to spend today in Lancashire before making a decision on whether to link up with Blackburn.
He has made only eight league appearances for Gillingham, scoring twice, but his stunning displays on the left wing have alerted a host of top clubs. Ewood chief executive John Williams confirmed today: Corbett is a young player we have looked at and we've checked out his progress.
He is one of a number of players under review and it is possible that we could sign him over the summer. Williams has again dismissed reports of a renewed bid for Southampton striker Egil Ostenstad.
Manager Roy Hodgson added: We have identified several targets and events are moving along quite quickly now. We are talking to at least two clubs about potential signings for next season.
Corbett, though, would be one for the future, as Hodgson continues his search for more experienced talent for the rigours of a Premiership season and a UEFA Cup campaign.
ROVERS have announced a short pre-season tour to Sweden in July. Blackburn will play Hodgson's former club Malmo before taking on Norkopping. Dates are yet to be announced.
Blackburn have been awarded the FA Premier League Fair Play Award for Supporters. The award is judged on the behavior of fans at home and away games. The club have received £20,000 to give to an FA-approved charity.
DERBY COUNTY
Paulo Wanchope has warned Premeriership defences that he will be even more dangerous next season. The Costa Rican striker scored 17 goals in 36 starts for Derby, but reckons he can do better than that.
''I'm someone who has a lot of belief in myself and my ability,'' Wanchope said. ''If I stay fit and stay in the side, I can score more than 20.''
EVERTON
The Toffees have appointed Mike Dickinson as their Education Welfare Officer, in charge of the educational side of their youth players in the new academy. Dickinson has coached at the club's centre of excellence for several years and has been physio to the England Schools Under-15 side for the past ten years. Dickinson, who resigns from his teaching post in Liverpool this summer, has also been back-up physio to the first team on many matchdays.
LIVERPOOL
Liverpool have poured scorn on newspaper reports that midfielder Paul Ince could be heading back to Inter Milan. One Sunday newspaper claimed that secret talks had taken place with a view to a possible deal being put in place, also involving Jamie Redknapp.
But Anfield chief executive Peter Robinson has announced: ''I have been made aware of these stories and they are absolute nonsense.''
LIVERPOOL have won the Premier League's Fair Play award for the fourth consecutive year. The award is based on the number of red and yellow cards received as well as the team's general attitude towards officials and opponents. The Anfield club will receive £30,000 to give to an FA-approved charity.
MEANWHILE, Liverpool are turning back the clock in the hope to match their success of the late sixties and the seventies by wearing a retro-style kit next season. The new Liverpool home shirt is plain red with a simple white round collar and cuffs.
The last time they wore such a kit was in 1976. Having just won the League, they won the UEFA Cup Final too before introducing a V-neck collar the next season and then pin-stripes. But will the old kit bring the same success to new Liverpool?
SOUTHAMPTON
Portsmouth manager Alan Ball believes England manager Glenn Hoddle has made a mistake by leaving Southampton star Matthew Le Tissier out of his World Cup plans.
Ball, who left Le Tiss out of his Saints line-up for a spell two years ago, claims Le Tissier should have been part of the 22-man squad for France 98, and is worried Hoddle could regret his decision if a penalty shoot-out is needed. Ball said: ''I can't believe Glenn has left him out. If anyone is going to provide you with a killer pass or a goal it's him.''
TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR
Spurs have defended an increase of up to 12% in season-ticket prices for next season. The club blamed the increase on the rising costs of players and the
redevelopment of White Hart Lane.
Prices at Spurs, who narrowly avoided relegation from the Premiership, are up by between 8-12%, with the most expensive ticket now costing £710. Season ticket holders will also be able to get into one less cup game than in previous years.
A Spurs spokesman said: ''Our main concentration has been on encouraging families back to White Hart Lane and admission prices to our newly-opened North Stand are already below those charged for example at Chelsea and West Ham United.
''However player costs are rising and the redevelopment of White Hart Lane into one of the most modern and impressive grounds in the country has inevitably forced some increases.''
Tottenham fans reacted angrily to the price rises and predicted that some fans would soon be unable to afford regular trips to White Hart Lane. Bernie Kingsley, co-ordinator of the Spurs Independent Supporters' Association, said: " I don't think it's justified but then I said that last season. We were fully expecting a price increase and I'm sure they'll blame it on the cost of players.
''My response to that is when is all this extra money from Sky going to start subsidising the average punter? The players have not earned their money this season but I think our prices would have gone up even if we had been relegated.''
SOME of the cash could go on Empoli striker Carmine Esposito, who kept the little Tuscan club in Serie A against the odds. Roma are also interested in the 27-year-old italian forward who scored an impressive 14 goals. News of his possible transfer comes the day after Empoli coach Luciano Spalletti said he was moving to Sampdoria next season.
WEST HAM UNITED
West Ham have denied reports that French international goalkeeper Bernard Lama has already signed a contract with former club Paris St Germain. PSG's executive president Charles Bietry claimed yesterday that Lama was one of a number of players joining a revamped squad next season.
But a Hammers' spokesperson said manager Harry Redknapp was keen to talk to Lama before his current contract at Upton Park expires at the end of next month.
The spokesperson said: ''We don't know anything about a move to PSG but, as far as we are concerned, Harry wants to speak to him again before his contract is up. It's not all cut and dried.''
Redknapp added: ''We will be talking to his agent and would like to keep him - but it's a question of the financial situation. I'm sure there are a lot of clubs who would be prepared to meet his demands. We'll see what happens.''
THE HAMMERS have released youngsters Jason Moore, Lee Goodwin, Anthony McFarlane and Neil Finn. Finn holds the record for the youngest player to play in the FA Carling Premiership - he was just 17 when the Hammers had a goalkeeping crisis and he played in a 2-0 defeat at Manchester City over two years ago but has not played since. The other three players have not previously played for the Hammers but Harry Redknapp has said he will try to get them new clubs.
Eire Under 21 striker Lee Boylan has been made an offer of a new deal but is keeping his options open for the time being.

SCOTS AGREE TO LUCRATIVE SKY DEAL
Internationals Go To Satellite
THE Scottish Football Association have signed a massive, exclusive £20m deal with Sky Sports for them to show all their home internationals live for the next four years and SFA president Jack McGinn hailed the move as the beginning of a new era for Scottish football.
McGinn said: The financial boost to the Scottish game is significant and will greatly assist the continued development of Scottish football at all levels. It will allow Scottish football fans both within Scotland and beyond to view matches involving the national teams and matches from the Tennents Scottish Cup over the next four years.
The deal means Sky will show Scotland's home qualifiers for the 2000 European Championship as well as their home games for the 2002 World Cup. Channel 5 have already secured a deal to screen all Scotland's away games in the Euro 2000 qualifiers
A number of international matches at Under-21 and B level will also be broadcast on Sky while terrestrial television will only be allowed to show highlights of Scotland's internationals.
Vic Wakeling, head of sport at Sky Television, said: We have had a great relationship with the Scottish Football Association over the past four years and we are delighted to be able to extend this partnership.
DIVISION ONE
News Round-Up
BIRMINGHAM CITY
Birmingham chairman David Gold is hoping that he can bring a swift conclusion to contract talks with manager Trevor Francis. Francis, who has been offered a two-year deal by Gold that will tie him to the club until the year 2000, is currently away on a family holiday. The deal could be sealed next week and Gold said: ''I don't expect negotiations to be protracted.''
BRADFORD CITY
Bradford will add a home game against Sunderland to their pre-season programme if the Wearsiders regain their top flight status in six days time. Peter Reid's side play Charlton Athletic at Wembley on Bank Holiday Monday in the First Division Play-Off final. And the Bantams have pencilled in a date to follow the visit of Derby County on July 25th if Sunderland get promoted.
MIDDLESBROUGH
Boro's two Italian stars are both facing knee operations before they return for pre-season training. Striker Marco Branca needs surgery after being ruled out at the end of the season and defender Gianluca Festa will have an exploratory operation. Six others are having minor operations but Alun Armstrong is the only one who might miss the start of training.
NOTTINGHAM FOREST
Former Forest players may have to forget their hopes of extracting compensation payments from Anderlecht - for the time being at least. UEFA's European Cup ban on Anderlecht for bribing a Spanish referee in their UEFA Cup semi-final against Forest in 1984 has been overturned. The Court of Sports Arbitration, set up by the International Olympic Committee, said in Lausanne that UEFA's executive committee were not competent to rule on the bribery charge which should have been dealt with by UEFA's judicial committee.
It is not clear if UEFA, whose executive are discussing the ruling, will abide by the court decision. ''We have no comment to make on this matter today,'' said a UEFA spokesman. Anderlecht were found guilty of paying the referee, who has since died, around £12,000 and, after beating Forest with two controversial refereeing decisions, lost to Tottenham Hotspur in the final.
OXFORD UNITED
Oxford manager Malcolm Shotton is to meet managing director Keith Cox prior to announcing his retained list later in the week. Among those whose futures look uncertain are Stewart Massey and skipper Mike Ford who were plagued with injury last season and Martin Aldridge. Others include senior players Brian Wilsterman and Mark Angel, who made rare appearances in the first teams.
PORT VALE
Vale stalwart Dean Glover is looking for a new club following talks with manager John Rudge. The 34-year-old defender is touting his services after being told there is no contract on offer ''at the present time.'' Glover, who hopes to land a player/coaching role, said: ''I've had nine and a half wonderful years at Vale and it's a sad moment.''
SWINDON TOWN
Swindon have organised a pre-season friendly against Premiership side Leicester City. The game against Martin O'Neill's outfit takes place at the County Ground on Saturday August 1 with a 3pm kick-off. Robins boss Steve McMahon said: ''It's a tough one for us, that's for sure. But we fancied a really good work out before the serious business gets underway.''
SUNDERLAND
Sunderland aim to end the Wembley jinx that has hit three other North East clubs this season. Middlesbrough and Newcastle have both lost Wembley finals, as have Tow Law Town in the FA Vase. But Sunderland boss Peter Reid said: ''Records like this are there to be broken.'' Sunderland face Charlton in the promotion Play-Off Final on Monday and Reid admitted: ''It will be very difficult.''
WEST BROMWICH ALBION
West Brom are being linked with a possible swoop for former Tottenham midfielder David Howells. Howells is available on a free transfer and Albion manager Denis Smith is keen to strengthen his side this summer in a bid to ensure that Albion are among the promotion contenders next season.
BAGGIES chairman Tony Hale has revealed that there is still some way to go before the club decide whether to press ahead with building a new £7m stand at the Hawthorns which would take capacity up to 30,000. Planning permission was granted last week, but Hale said: ''That was the first stage. Then we have to buy the Woodman pub and then we have to make sure that the money is in place to pay for the stand.'' The Baggies may wait to see if they are heading for the Premiership next season before starting work on the stand.

News Round-Up
DIVISION TWO
CARLISLE UNITED
Carlisle chairman Michael Knighton has denied he is ready to appoint former Oldham boss Neil Warnock as the new manager at Brunton Park. Knighton has spoken with Warnock but there was no suggestion of a managerial appointment. ''I was making inquiries about players he knows and I respect his opinion,'' said Knighton.
PRESTON NORTH END
Preston manager David Moyes has been awarded a new contract and vowed: I want to see this club back in the First Division. Moyes has agreed a one-year roll-over deal and said: I think I steadied the ship since I took over in January and helped give the players their self-belief back. Now I am determined to try and finish the job by moving this club along another step. Preston North End have played at this level of football for far too long now. I would love to be the man to help push this great club on and into a higher league. Formerly the player-assistant manager, Moyes took charge in January following Gary Peters' resignation and steered Preston clear of the relegation trapdoor with promotion form in their last 13 games. Moyes will continue as a player next season. Deputy chairman Derek Shaw said: It is very positive news for Preston because we firmly believe that David Moyes is a great young manager for the future. David has thought about football management for the past ten years and has proved his determination to break into this side of the game. I think David has done an exceptional job here." Goalkeeper Kelham O'Hanlon will join Moyes' managerial team as first team coach at Deepdale, while North End defender Colin Murdock has been placed on standby for Northern Ireland's friendly international against Spain in Santander on June 3.
WALSALL
Walsall are to have further talks with winger John Hodge in a bid to try and persuade him to pledge his future to the Second Division club. The former Swansea City wide-man is out of contract this summer, but the Saddlers are keen to keep him and he has been offered a new deal by manager Ray Graydon. Hodge did have negotiations last week and more talks are set to take place this week as Graydon plans for his first season in charge.
YORK CITY
York goalkeeper Mark Samways is to enter hospital to undergo a knee operation. Samways, who missed the final few games of the Minstermen's Second Division campaign, aggravated the injury during a reserve clash with Rochdale in April. Defender Tony Barras will also face the surgeon's knife on a hip problem which has dogged him over the last several seasons.
DIVISION THREE
MANSFIELD TOWN
A war of words has erupted again over the planning application of Mansfield to redevelop their Field Mill stadium. MP Alan Meale responded to district councillors' claims that the plans were second rate and slipshod by challenging them to ''do better themselves.'' The club has received the green light to build three new all seater stands, and refurbish the fourth, in the £5m plan.
NOTTS COUNTY
Notts boss Sam Allardyce has appointed former Preston team-mate Gary Brazil as youth coach. Brazil, 35, a veteran of Sheffield United, Newcastle, Port Vale, and Fulham, replaces Alan Young, who left the club in April. Allardyce said: ''Gary knows what it takes to become a player - that makes me optimistic for the future of our youth set-up here.'' Brazil, who scored four times in 40 appearances for Conference side Slough this season, was a stylish left-sided attacker who joined Newcastle from Preston in 1989 but was unable to save them from relegation and was sold to Fulham a year later after starting only seven games.
PETERBOROUGH UNITED
Peterborough are freezing their admission prices for the fifth year in a row after their disappointing season. Posh have massive debts but are still one of the cheapest teams to watch in the Third Division. Manager Barry Fry said: ''I shouldn't think there's a club in the country who haven't put their prices up in the past five years.''
