IT'S CELTIC'S TITLE...AT LAST!
Jansen's Heroes End Rangers' Ten-Year Domination
Celtic 2 St.Johnstone 0
HARALD Brattbakk sent Parkhead into raptures after ending ten years of heartache and under-achievement coupled with the added agony of complete Rangers' domination - for the new, Wim Jansen-inspired Celtic.
The £2.2million signing proved to be an unlikely hero as the Bell's Scottish League title returned to the Bhoys for the first time since 1988. Brattbakk added the crucial second goal with 15 minutes to go after Henrik Larsson had opened the scoring in the third minute.
So it was that a Norwegian and a Swede delivered the title to Celtic's Dutch head coach Jansen. All three men are in their first season at the club and expect a night of celebrations in Glasgow's east end.
Jansen said: It is no wonder the fans are so happy. They have waited so long for this and to win the title on the last day of the season is perfect. Even though it went all the way, we always believed that we would win the race.
The supporters really helped us through the bad times and this championship is as much for them as the players themselves. As for my own future now, I can't really say. I just want to enjoy this moment and celebrate into the night.
So Rangers' attempt to secure a tenth successive title failed and their domination of the Scottish scene is over. Little wonder the Celtic fans revelled in the demise of their old firm rivals with 50,000 fans chanting ''Cheerio, 10 in a row'' after Brattbakk's coup de grace found the net.
Brattbakk had been brought off the bench after an hour, replacing Simon Donnelly. His form had dipped so much since the New Year that he last appeared in the Scottish Cup semi-final defeat by Rangers last month. But he made up for lost time in some style and is now guaranteed hero status.
Celtic got off to a dream start when Paul Lambert released Larsson, who raced away to drive an unstoppable shot into the corner from 20 yards. It was the 19th goal of the season from the former Feyenoord star, who cost £650,000 last summer.
He was the toast of Celtic Park until Brattback snatched the personal glory with 15 minutes to go. Celtic's players celebrated long and hard, knowing they had won the League by two points from their old firm rivals Rangers, who also chalked up a victory at Tannadice.
Celtic's players returned to the dressing-room but only for a brief spell and reappeared on the stroke of 5pm for the presentation. Skipper Tom Boyd went forward onto the podium to receive the trophy and the players then went on a lap of honour in front of an ecstatic crowd, who had waited ten long years for this day to come.
Dundee United 1 Rangers 2
It was win but still bust for Rangers as victory at Dundee United failed to hand them a record 10th successive Premier Division title. With Celtic beating St Johnstone to secure their first championship for a decade, Rangers' misery was compounded by Jorg Albertz's red card with six minutes remaining.
The German, whose 53rd minute penalty proved to be the winning goal at Tannadice, was punished for aiming a kick at home substitute Steve Thompson.
A parting shot from Chelsea-bound Brian Laudrup after 31 minutes put the Ibrox outfit ahead before that advantage was doubled with Albertz's spot-kick, awarded for a David Sinclair handball.
United drew a goal back after 65 minutes, when Lars Zetterlund's glancing header converted Kjell Olofsson's precise cross, but it mattered little at the finish.
For Rangers manager Walter Smith it was the first time he had entered the last day of the season with the title destiny out of his own hands during his seven years in charge.

SCOTTISH PREMIER ROUND-UP
|
Hearts 2 Dunfermline 0
French ace Stephane Adam handed UEFA Cup-bound Hearts a morale-boosting build-up to the Scottish Cup final with the vital opener at Tynecastle.
He fired home his 11th goal of the season in the first half before substitute Derek Holmes secured the win with seven minutes remaining.
It was Hearts' first victory in six outings and sets them up nicely for the showdown with Rangers at Celtic Park next Saturday.
Kilmarnock 1 Hibs 1
Kilmarnock clinched fourth spot and a possible crack at Europe with a share of the points against doomed Hibernian. But the visitors spoiled the party with a goal seconds from the end.
Killie made the breakthrough on 15 minutes with a well-executed goal down the right hand side. Gary Holt and Nevin played a clever one-two, with Nevin turning the ball across goal to the unmarked Mark Roberts who swept the ball into the Hibs' net.
Killie were well in control at this stage and should have gone on to add to their lead but Hibs pushed forward in the dying minutes in a bid to salvage a draw and with almost the last kick of the ball Steve Crawford obliged when he sent a super shot just inside Marshall's left-hand post.
Motherwell 1 Aberdeen 2
Two early goals from Billy Dodds gave Aberdeen a comfortable win after the striker cashed in on a nightmare spell for the home side.
Motherwell defender Steve McMillan incredibly armed out an Eoin Jess cross and Dodds rifled home the spot-kick.
Then, in 22 minutes, Dodds added a second when he turned on a Mike Newell pass to side-step keeper Scott Thompson to hammer in the second.
Motherwell pulled one back through Ian Ross midway through the second-half but they could not get the equaliser.
SCOTTISH LOWER DIVISION ROUND-UP
Partick were relegated from Division One after Ayr beat them 3-1 at Firhill. A Thistle win would have seen Ayr go down but United were always far too strong for their Glaswegian opponents.
Dundee, who had already clinched the title, lost 1-0 at St Mirren and second-placed Falkirk were defeated 1-0 at Airdrie.
Stranraer took the Division Two title after they won 1-0 at Clyde, while Clydebank will join them in the First Division next season after they crushed rock-bottom Brechin 6-1.
Livingston, the League leaders this morning, needed just a point to go up but they lost 2-1 at home to Inverness.
Stenhousemuir have been relegated to the Third Division after they lost 1-0 at Queen of the South - victory would have seen them overtake Clyde.
Arbroath are promoted to Division Two after claiming the one point they needed thanks to a 1-1 home draw with Queen's Park.
They finished one point ahead of Ross, who beat East Stirlingshire 5-2, while Alloa had already sealed the title.
Dumbarton prop up the entire Scottish League after they lost 3-2 at home to Cowdenbeath.
