IT'S ARSENAL AT THE DOUBLE

ALTHOUGH it pains me to write this - congratulations to Arsenal on winning the championship. I now expect the Gunners to go on and complete the Double by beating Newcastle United in the FA Cup Final at Wembley next weekend.

In retrospect, I can point out two fixtures that were critical in the title race. We met Sheffield Wednesday and West Ham when we had a lot of injuries, if we'd taken four points from those two away games I think it would have disheartened Arsenal a bit - but we only managed one.

They knew at that stage they were only three wins behind and had a match against us at Old Trafford to come. Their 1-0 win at our place really put the cat among the pigeons, even a draw would have kept us in pole position. But you have to take your hat off to any team that can go out and win ten Premiership matches on the trot as Arsenal have done.

Like any successful side, they have the solid base on which to build a winning team. Their defence have played together for a long time and are a well-drilled unit and their midfield players Emmanuel Petit and Patrick Vieira give added protection to the back four in the way that Paul Ince, Roy Keane and Nicky Butt have done for us down the years. The French pair are box-to-box players and are able to play creatively without forgetting their defensive duties. When you are defensively strong, the flair players in your side have the confidence to go out and play - and that's what Dennis Bergkamp and Marc Overmars have excelled at in recent weeks.

Overmars has been important to them after taking time to adjust to the English game. His pace is frightening. We first saw it at Wembley in a World Cup qualifier and he hasn't lost any of it despite a really bad knee injury. Bergkamp is no slouch either, but his speciality is his ability to see situations early and create that bit of magic. And his finishing has been of the highest quality.

The way Arsenal are playing, you have to make them favourites to win the FA Cup - I'm certainly not going to bet against them. The confidence is flowing through the team and, when you're on a run like theirs, you go out on the park believing you're going to win. Don't be fooled by the 4-0 defeat at Liverpool on Wednesday, the players will be focusing on the Cup Final and will be fired up for that game. Newcastle have been through an indifferent time and they will be looking at the Cup Final knowing it's going to be very tough.

There's still no doubt in my mind that United will be boosted next season by the return of Roy Keane, who has proved time and again that he is the best midfielder in the country. If we had kept everyone else fit, we could have been champions even without Roy. After all, we played some fantastic football when he was out. But we had other injuries and couldn't carry it off. Arsenal had injuries and suspensions before Christmas and their results suffered, too - it just happened to us at the wrong time.

You have to congratulate Arsene Wenger on what he's achieved at Highbury. He's adapted very well to English football and has been very methodical and organised in his approach. He's changed training a bit, apparently - the Arsenal lads do lots and lots of stretching exercises before training, but it seems to be working and I hope they enjoy having the Premiership trophy on loan!

The end of another long, hard season is the time when most professional footballers' thoughts turn to having a holiday somewhere sunny. I went to Mauritius with Lee Sharpe and his Missus a couple of years ago and had a great time but I'm going a bit closer to home this year, to Portugal for a bit of rest and relaxation. Lying on the beach all day would bore me stupid, so I'll be packing my golf clubs and tennis racket.
