Free-Civ(ilization)

FreeCiv Screenshot Free Civ is another excellent multi-player internet game. These are the sort of games that I feel are of interest to people who read me web pages, as I'm sure many of you like nothing more then being able to play games against your friends over the Internet.

As you may have worked out by now, freeciv is a free multiplayer version of Civilization. It contains virtually all the features of the original version with the added bonus of allowing up to 14 players to play against each-other at one time.

For those of you who do not know, Civilization is a strategy game in which you take the role of a ruler of an entire civilization through many generations. To start off with your Civilization is very small, it is your job to build it up and be the first one to lead the colonization of space. You do this by creating citys and then building them up, making sure the citizens are happy, and of course creating an army in case someone decides to attack you (Of course you can attack them first ;).

As well as this you also have to make sure your civilization is researching new technologies at a decent rate. Advancments in technology give you the chance to build new units such as ships and aeroplanes, as well as giving you more buildings to place in your city such as schools and universities. All in all the game is very deep and takes quite a while to get used to.

This is a conversion of an X-Windows version of this game, both versions of the game intergrate well so you can play people who only have access to a unix computer as well as fellow Amiga users. There is hopefully conversions taking place on other platforms so you'll should be able to play anyone who has a net connection.

FreeCiv Screenshot To play the game one of the players has to run the server program that is provided, all the other players then connect to this. It is advisable that the person running the server has quite a fast connection as the data of all players has to go through them. There are also some public servers which host games on a regular basis, if you don't have anyone else to play against have a go on one of these.

To play FreeCiv you will need an 68020 Amiga with AGA or a Graphics Card and a far amount of memory. The itgame requires MUI 3.8 or higher, the picture.datatype V43 and some gif datatype. To run the server software you will also require the ixemul.library V46 and the ixnet.library.

The Amiga version of the game is still being worked on and will hopefully get better.

The Amiga port of this game was done by Troels Walsted Hansen, any questions regarding the Amiga version can be directed to him at troels@stud.cs.uit.no
