I'd like volunteer(s) to write these two manpages, please. The
scripts seem to be stable, and they're small.

NB that I'd expect a manpage to be more than a converted usage
message. Detailed descriptions (reverse engineered from the code and
from common sense) of the actions of the script and the semantics of
the options are required.

start-stop-daemon is in Perl, update-rc.d is in sh. The volunteer
for each manpage will have to be competent at reading another
programmer's code in Perl or sh, respectively.

Ian.

How about the following design criteria:

* There should be no manpages installed unless the corresponding
program is installed.

* If man.deb is installed all the base system manpages should be.

* If a program is installed its manpages should usually be, though
this may require installation of an additional package, say fooman.deb
(which would be Recommended: by the original foo.deb), or man.deb.

This leads me to the following proposed policy:

* A base system package should contain manpages for its programs
either in itself or in man.deb. We may wish to decide that all the
base system manpages should be in man.deb, though this may prove
logistically difficult and may cross boundaries between developers in
a nasty way.

* A non-base package should contain all of its manpages in its .deb
file or in a separate fooman.deb file. The latter doesn't seem too
helpful for most packages, so it should probably be discouraged.

* There should be no manpages in man.deb relating to non-base
packages.

This is normal. A nice example is install-info, which should be in
the normal PATH because it might be used to update a user's private
info `dir' file, but whose manpage definitely belongs in section 8.
Section 8 is for system maintenance commands, many of which are also
useful to the normal user and so belong in .../bin rather than sbin.

* There should be no manpages in man.deb relating to non-base
packages.

> While looking at this, I noted that a number of the /usr/man/man8

This is normal. A nice example is install-info, which should be in
the normal PATH because it might be used to update a user's private
info `dir' file, but whose manpage definitely belongs in section 8.
Section 8 is for system maintenance commands, many of which are also
useful to the normal user and so belong in .../bin rather than sbin.

Ian.

Sigh.... It's a typo in the script itself, of course, and not
the only problem with it. Thanks for seeing that I'd missed this
and rubbing my nose in it. I can use a good public drubbing every
now and then ;-).

This comes from typing the script directly into "cat>scriptfile"
after base system install, and then proofreading carefully enough,
and being too rushed to validate the output before posting it.
( I see that the base system now does include /usr/bin/ed, and I
really ought to reacquaint myself with ed. )

I've fixed the problems I saw and re-run the script on a virgin
0.93R4 installation. I've also added a script sections to detect
and report man8 programs installed in the bin directories and
man1 programs installed in the sbin directories.

Here's the revised script, for your proofreading pleasure.

#!/bin/sh
#
echo
echo programs without man8 pages
for i in /sbin/* /usr/sbin/*
do
    name=`basename $i .8`
    if [ ! -f /usr/man/man8/$name.8 ]
    then
        echo $i
    fi
done
#
echo
echo programs without man1 pages
for i in /bin/* /usr/bin/*
do
    name=`basename $i .1`
    if [ ! -f /usr/man/man1/$name.1 ]
    then
        echo $i
    fi
done
#
echo
echo man8 pages without programs in /sbin, /usr/sbin
for i in /usr/man/man8/*
do
    name=`basename $i .8`
    if [ ! -f /sbin/$name -a ! -f /usr/sbin/$name ]
    then
        echo $i
    fi
done
#
echo
echo man8 programs installed in /bin, /usr/bin
for i in /usr/man/man8/*
do
    name=`basename $i .8`
    if [ -f /bin/$name ]
    then
        echo $i /bin/$name
    fi
    if [ -f /usr/bin/$name ]
    then
        echo $i /usr/bin/$name
    fi
done
#
echo
echo man1 pages without programs in /bin, /usr/bin
for i in /usr/man/man1/*
do
    name=`basename $i .1`
    if [ ! -f /bin/$name -a ! -f /usr/bin/$name ]
    then
        echo $i
    fi
done
#
echo
echo man1 programs installed in /sbin, /usr/sbin
for i in /usr/man/man1/*
do
    name=`basename $i .1`
    if [ -f /sbin/$name ]
    then
        echo $i /sbin/$name
    fi
    if [ -f /usr/sbin/$name ]
    then
        echo $i /usr/sbin/$name
    fi
done
#

Bill,
Is this just a typo in your message or is it
in your working script?

Bill,
Is this just a typo in your message or is it
in your working script?

I looked at this a bit more after getting home. I ran
the following script on a virgin 0.93R4 install, and
again after installing man.deb.

#!/bin/sh
#
echo
echo programs without man8 pages
for i in /sbin/* /usr/sbin/*
do
    if [ ! -f /usr/man/man8/$i.8 ]
    then
        echo $i
    fi
done
#
echo
echo programs without man1 pages
for i in /bin/* /usr/bin/*
do
    if [ ! -f /usr/man/man1/$i.1 ]
    then
        echo $i
    fi
done
#
echo
echo man8 pages without programs
for i in /usr/man/man8/*
do
    name=`basename $8 .8`
    if [ ! -f /sbin/$name -a ! -f /usr/sbin/$name ]
    then
        echo $i
    fi
done
#
echo
echo man1 pages without programs
for i in /usr/man/man1/*
do
    name=`basename $i .1`
    if [ ! -f /bin/$name -a ! -f /usr/bin/$name ]
    then
        echo $i
    fi
done

I took a quick look. In general, the situation seems to be:

1. After base system installation, we have some programs with
manpages installed and some programs without man pages. I
haven't yet checked for man pages without programs.

2. After man.deb installation, we appear to have less programs
without man pages, but we've picked up some manpages without
    programs.

3. Installation of other packages (e.g. netbase, netstd) probably
supplies more man pages for programs which were provided in
the base system without man pages.

While looking at this, I noted that a number of the /usr/man/man8
manpages document programs which are installed in directories other
than /sbin and /usr/sbin.

It seems like we ought to figure out what our policy is on who should
supply manpages and, once we know what our policy is, check to see
that we follow it.

I can survey the way things are done by the 0.93R4 base disk set
and the various .deb packages I currently have, but I'm not sure
that'd accomplish much until we determine and state the policy.

At first blush, it seems as if whoever supplies the program should
supply the man pages. An exception might be the base system, which might
supply _all_ base man pages in a separate package which could be omitted
by anyone installing a sparse system without man pages (e.g., a disk
constrained system used as an AX25 router). Anyone wishing to avoid
package man page installation might symlink /usr/man to /dev/null after
base system install (perhaps this would be best done via the existing
special initial-login dialogue. Or, it occurs to me, it could be
doce during dinstall dialogue prior to base system install -- which'd
obviate the need to separate the man pages out of the base system into
a separate package.).

Sounds like something which needs discussion, and not like something which
needs to be fixed before our still-upcoming release can take place.

As a separate issue, I noted while looking at this that the base system
supplied some programs which are later overwritten by non-base packages.
I'd have to go back and recheck to confirm details, though. I think
ping, for one, is an example of this.
