My modules sysv and binfmt_elf can be loaded properly during booting.
Calculation dependencies fails on these two.
I will try to describe this problem more extensivly as soon as I can get
hold of the error messages during booting.

Thank you for the problem report you have sent regarding Debian GNU/Linux.
This is an automatically generated reply, to let you know your message has
been received. It is being forwarded to the developers' mailing list for
their attention; they will reply in due course.
If you wish to submit further information on your problem, please send
it to debian-bugs@pixar.com, but please ensure that the Subject
line of your message starts with "Bug#1253" or "Re: Bug#1253" so that
we can identify it as relating to the same problem.
Please do not reply to the address at the top of this message,
unless you wish to report a problem with the bug-tracking system.
Your message didn't have a Package: line at the start (in the
pseudo-header following the real mail header), or didn't have a
psuedo-header at all.
This makes it much harder for us to categorise and deal with your
problem report; please ensure that you say which package(s) and
version(s) the problem is with next time. Some time in the future the
problem reports system may start rejecting such messages.

I tried loading the binfmt_elf.o manually with the command
insmod binfmt_elf.o
invoked from the /lib/modules/1.3.18/misc directory resulting in:
dump_fpu: wrong version
Failed to load module! The symbols from kernel 1.3.18 don't match 1.3.18
manually loading sysv.o
gave
strnlen: wrong version
Failed to load module! The symbols from kernel 1.3.18 don't match 1.3.18
Now what?
Erick

I did a strace /etc/init.d/modules (like jdassen adviced me in private mail)
and this it what it looks like:
Nearly at the end it goes wrong. I subtracted a part from the output:

I think you'll see the problem if you run "depmod -a" once the system is
booted. I haven't had much time to investigate it yet, but I set a build
running with the offending modules linked into the kernel instead of being
built as modules. That'll probably work around it without any more attention.
Thanks
Bruce

Sorry depmod -a didn't show any usefull stuff it uses nm or so and that
is an elf binary on my system and couldn't work because all elf didn't work
. I reinstalled image-1.2.10 and modules with succes and will wait for a
new "stable" kernel.

OK, that's why it was broken - because you were using the ELF nm on
the A.OUT kernel.
