GRIMSBY BOUNCE BACK
DIVISION TWO PLAY-OFF FINAL: GRIMSBY TOWN 1 NORTHAMPTON TOWN 0

A DECISIVE winner from Grimsby's 22-goal striker Kevin Donovan after 18 minutes was enough to see the Lincolnshire side score a deserved victory over Northampton Town in yesterday's second division play-off and send The Mariners back into the Nationwide First Division after just one season away.

Donovan capitalised on some slack marking in the Northampton defence to race onto a through ball from Wayne Burnett before drawing Grimsby keeper Andy Woodman and calmly stroking home. That goal alone was enough to seal victory and delighted the 20,000 Grimsby fans at Wembley despite being outnumbered two to one by Northampton supporters.

The striker could even afford the luxury of a missed penalty in the second half after Jack Lester was tripped by Cobblers defender Ray Warburton following a jink inside the Northampton penalty area. Donovan struck the ball cleanly, but goalkeeper Andy Woodman dived high to his left to palm the shot away.

The wives and girlfriends of the Grimsby players, bottle blondes to a woman, were left teetering on the edge of their seats as the referee played six minutes of injury time, but the Mariners clung onto secure their precious 1-0 victory. Afterwards Donovan was delighted to have earned his side a place in Division One:

It was a case of

Grimsby celebrate promotion
the good, the bad and the ugly for me today. I scored one, nearly gifted Northampton a goal with a terrible back pass and then missed the penalty. But it was a good day out for the fans and I'm delighted that I could play my part in getting Grimsby up again.

In a free-flowing and entertaining match, Grimsby's ability to play their more sophisticated brand of football against Northampton's bullish style proved crucial and the single goal victory could probably should - have been more. Manager Alan Buckley said:

I thought we had many chances to take the game comfortably, but when the board came up at the end of 90 minutes saying there were six minutes of injury time to play my heart was going like the clappers.

This is a massive game for the town and the football club. All you can ask from your players is that they give you their all and that's what my players have given me.
Meanwhile, disappointed Northampton boss Ian Atkins said: We did well, but we were lacking that little bit of quality in the final third, which has been the story all season to be honest. But we'll learn from today and hopefully be back next season.
