TIGHT GAME PREDICTED IN NON-LEAGUE SHOWPIECE
FA Umbro Trophy Final Cheltenham Town v Southport
SOUTHPORT and Cheltenham Town managers Paul Futcher and Steve Cotterill believe that just one goal will separate the two teams after ninety minutes in the FA Umbro Trophy final today. Wembley, the Venue of Legends' , will play host to the two non-League minnows for their big day out and both managers are aware of the job in hand. We're not taking League positions into account, said Cotterill. We're just very pleased to be going to Wembley and we'll try to add to our recent successes. But the game is a one-off and whoever plays best on the day will take the spoils.
Southport boss Futcher, meanwhile, believes that if his side enjoy the moment, then they will come out on top: Both teams are there on merit, he explained. Obviously it's going to be a close game, but the best way to play these games is just to enjoy it.
The form book clearly favours Cheltenham to come out on top though. They finished runners-up to Halifax in the GM Vauxhall Conference, while Southport ended the season down in sixteenth spot. And when the two teams last met, on May 2, Cheltenham won 2-0.
If my players express themselves I believe they can more than rise to the occasion, countered Futcher. The heat will play a part and whoever gets the first goal will get a massive boost, but I wouldn't like to say who it will be. If all my players come off the pitch tired I will be happy - I simply cannot ask for more than for them to give me, the club and the fans 100%.
Cotterill is as determined as a manager as he was as a player - at Wimbledon, Brighton and Bournemouth - and he sees the game as a high-profile televised encounter which could help to further his own ambitions:
In the short term I'm looking to be the manager of a Football League club. Whether that will be Cheltenham I don't The job isn't done here yet, though, and Sunday will finalise the season. It will be close, but that's where we have the character to snatch it.
Some 17,000 Cheltenham Town fans are pouring into London from all over the South-West with Cotterill imposing a tough drink ban as his players trained up until the morning of one of the biggest matches in the Gloucestershire club's history.
HESKEY FIRES YOUNG ENGLAND
England U-21 3 South Africa U-21 1
EMILE HESKEY scored his second and third goals of the Toulon Under-21 Tournament as England turned in a much more accomplished performance than in Thursday's draw with France.
Although England led early on against France they were hanging on for most of the game, relying on Tranmere's Steve Simonsen to keep the French at bay. In spite of those heroics the 19-year-old keeper missed out in favour of the returning Richard Wright of Ipswich. Wright joined up with the squad after his club were knocked out of the play-offs on Wednesday night, as did his teammate Kieron Dyer. Between them they seemed to add great cohesion to the England defence, and although England didn't score until the 37th minute through Frank Lampard, they always looked the better side. The breakthrough came when Alan Rogers pulled the ball back from the byline for Lampard to sidefoot home past keeper Emile Baron from just inside the box.
Heskey scored his first just before half time, when Lampard's throw allowed him to bulldozer the South African defence and loop the ball over the advancing Baron's head. Ten minutes into the second half a long ball kicked downfield by goalkeeper Wright wasn't dealt with by the South Africans, and Heskey was able to shake off his man and roll the ball into the net. Having done his job, Marcus Bent was brought on to rest Heskey. Liverpool's Jamie Carragher, who had a fine game in midfield, was likewise taken off in a double substitution. Although Salmon caught England before they could reorganise and pulled one back almost immediately, South Africa were powerless to prevent their second defeat of the tournament and are now out of contention. To add to their bad day, Aaron Mokoena was sent off after 66 minutes for his second bookable offence. England play Argentina on Monday.

YOUNG FRENCH TOO STRONG FOR ARGENTINA
France U-21 3 Argentina U-21 0
HOSTS France completed a comfortable victory over Argentina which improves England's chances of at least finishing second in the group. The 3-0 scoreline means that Argentina would have to beat England by two goals to get through.
The Argentinians played neat football, but lacked botha cutting edge and the power of the French. Daniel Moreira in the first half, and Ousmane Dabo midway through the second gave France a 2-0 lead, before Louis Saha, scorer of the French equaliser against England on Thursday, completed the rout with the pick of the goals. After the French had pulled the defence out of position, Saha powered in a drive from the edge of the area which had bounced back out of the net almost before the keeper had time to react.
