DENNIS WILL DECIDE WHETHER HE IS FIT ENOUGH FOR FINAL
ARSENAL'S influential Dutchman Dennis Bergkamp looks set to defy the odds which were so heavily stacked against him returning to action in time for tomorrow's FA Cup Final… by declaring HIMSELF fit.
The double Player of the Year winner, who missed the last three Premiership games with a hamstring injury, has made a remarkable recovery and took part in a full training session yesterday; much to the delight and surprise of manager Arsene Wenger.
But the Arsenal coach, after consultation with the player, will not make a final decision until just hours before kick-off and only after establishing Bergkamp's "state of mind". He does not want an under-strength striker, with half an eye on the World Cup, ruining his team's chances like Middlesbrough's Fabrizio Ravanelli did by limping off with a hamstring injury early in last year's final.
Wenger said: "I cannot say that he will definitely play but it looks much more hopeful today. I've been surprised by the speed of his recovery and the doctors are not stopping me from playing him. A week ago, I would have said he had little chance of being fit. But I now think he stands a good chance. Now we have to

decide whether he is free enough and right in his own mind to play. I also need to know whether the World Cup is a worry to him. He is honest enough not to play if he isn't fully fit. That would be letting his team-mates down. He will not play unless he is 100% fit and we will not take any risks at all. But we will not make a decision until Saturday.
Bergkamp looked fit and relaxed after yesterday's training session, during which he looked to be showing the confidence and fluency which has made him such a vital figure in Arsenal's memorable season. He said: "I am still optimistic that I can play at least some part. It would be a great way to end a wonderful season, especially as I have been playing my best ever football this season.
His Dutch team-mate Marc Overmars underlined the importance of his international colleague, claiming: It will be a massive boost for us. We are all hoping that Dennis can play at Wembley, not just because of his individual quality but his team play. Of course we need him.
