HANSEN'S OLD PALS ACT
TV Pundit Gives Dalglish's Boys A Boost

THE bookies might be writing off Newcastle's chances of denying Arsenal a League and Cup Double, but Match Of The Day pundit Alan Hansen and St James Park old boy Lee Clark can both see Alan Shearer lifting the trophy on Saturday afternoon.

Arsenal are red-hot evens favourites for the big match, with Newcastle as 11-4 outsiders and the draw at 15-8. But Hansen is backing Newcastle boss, and big pal, Kenny Dalglish to end the Magpies' miserable season on a high: "Newcastle will probably start as underdogs, but if they have a good day they can win."

The Geordies' chances will be even better if Arsenal star Dennis Bergkamp, the players' and football writers' Player Of The Year, fails to recover from the hamstring injury that has forced him to miss the last three matches.

"The key player of the afternoon is likely to be Bergkamp, if he is fit, because he takes up a dangerous position behind the two strikers, said Hansen. Patrick Vieira and Emmanuel Petit have been outstanding in Arsenal's midfield. It's up to Newcastle to make them have a bad day by starting quickly and getting after them."

Few are better placed to assess the Magpies' chances than Tyneside-born midfielder Clark, who spent eight seasons at St James Park before a £2.5m move to Sunderland last summer. And he says anyone who has written off their chances is mad.

Newcastle certainly have enough quality to beat Arsenal, even though they have had a great season in the Premiership,'' the 25-year-old said. ''It is no more than their fans deserve - it is not as if they have been used to success over the last few decades. Dalglish has an excellent squad and they should not be written off, I believe they've got a great chance. With this one victory they can salvage their season. I can honestly see them defeating Arsenal.''

GREEK defender Dabizas is confident his Newcastle side can put their miserable season behind them on Saturday.

''Because this is all we can win this season and everyone makes Arsenal the favourites, we have nothing to lose - so why shouldn't we fancy our chances? he said. Maybe we are the ones starving for a win. I don't believe we are the outsiders, this is different to the league and anything can happen, especially with a great player like Alan Shearer in our side.

Dalglish only bought Dabizas from Olympiakos in March, but he is as passionate about Newcastle's first final in 24 years as any member of the Toon Army.

Throughout the world, this is the match which everyone looks out for and now, after being at the club for less than two months, I'm hoping to be part of it! he said. It means so much to me. It is a different experience to finals around the world. It is like a celebration. Wembley has the tradition and the fans make it very special.''

England captain Shearer is the man the Magpies hope will score their winner on Saturday, but Dabizas would love to get on the scoresheet, too: My dream has always been to score goals. A goal at Wembley is too much to hope for, but you never know.''

BENT PREFERS ENGLAND TO JAMAICA FOR THE SUMMER
Toulon Tournament Preview

France v England Under-21s
ENGLAND'S young lions meet France tonight in the Toulon Under-21 tournament, aiming to follow in the footsteps of Alan Shearer, Paul Gascoigne and Robbie Fowler.
That trio all cut their teeth in Toulon before becoming full internationals and Under-21 boss Peter Taylor is hoping this year's party can do the same.
''There are boys here who are playing in the Premier League and are doing it right, said Taylor, England's first full-time Under-21 coach. I hope that the players realise that for them to get into the seniors we want them to have the Under-21 education first. Playing in Toulon against foreign opposition of the quality of Brazil and Argentina is experience you can't get anywhere else.''
Taylor is missing Aston Villa's Lee Hendrie, Danny Murphy of Liverpool, Matt Jansen of Crystal Palace, Southampton's Kevin Davies and Wimbledon's Carl Cort through injury, while Liverpool's Michael Owen is with the senior squad. Taylor left behind Oxford's Paul Powell and Mark Tyler of Peterborough when he cut his squad to 18.
PALACE striker Marcus Bent will be playing having turned down the chance to join Jamaica's World Cup party. Bent, who is 20 next week, was invited to jump on the Reggae Boyz' bandwagon just hours after getting his first call-up for Toulon, but is expected to make his Under-21 debut tonight. Playing will commit his international future to England because this is a UEFA-sanctioned tournament.
"It was very tempting," said Bent, who was born in London, but qualifies through his Jamaican father, Ben. "But it's always been my dream to play for England. I was born in England and regard it as my home. It didn't take me long to make up my mind. I spoke to my dad and he was fine about it, he said: 'Go out and do what you think's best for your career'.''
England's other group games are against South Africa on Saturday and Argentina two days later. Germany, China, Brazil and Portugal make up the other group.
The full squad: Simonsen (Tranmere), Lucas (Preston), Clegg, Curtis (both Man Utd), Rogers (Nottm Forest), Howe (Bournemouth), Purse (Birmingham), Marsh (Oxford), Kozluk, Elliott (both Derby), Carragher (Liverpool), Lampard (West Ham), Oakley (Southampton), Clemence (Tottenham), Heskey (Leicester), Euell (Wimbledon), Allen (Tottenham), Bent (Crystal Palace).
