PREMIERSHIP ROUND-UP
The Latest Breaking News On All The Premiership Sides
ASTON VILLA
John Gregory is interrupting Villa's bid for a UEFA Cup place to help out a former player. The first team squad are going to Port Vale for a testimonial match for defender Dean Glover.
Birmingham-born Glover, 34, made 38 senior appearances for Villa before clocking up more than 400 League games with Middlesbrough and Port Vale.
MEANWHILE, record-breaking youth team marksman Darius Vassell has reached another milestone with a first goal for the reserves. One month short of his 18th birthday, he was on target at Blackburn as Villa finished fourth in the Pontin's Premier Division. Vassell was recently introduced to the Premiership squad after a prolific campaign of 38 goals for the juniors.
BARNSLEY
Chairman John Dennis is confident manager Danny Wilson will steer the club back to the Premiership next season.
Wilson pledged his loyalty to the Tykes and vowed to honour the remaining two years on his contract following Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Leicester which condemned Barnsley back to the First Division after just one season in the top flight. Dennis, who admits Wilson has conducted himself with dignity in the face of constant adversity over the last nine months, believes he will continue to do so throughout the close season.
Despite Wilson's faith in a club he has served for almost four years, his name is certain to be linked with several managerial vacancies likely to appear in the coming weeks.
With Sheffield Wednesday boss Ron Atkinson refusing to confirm whether he would like to stay on at Hillsborough next season after doing all that was asked of him in steering the club away from relegation this term, Wilson could possibly be earmarked again for the Owls hot-seat.
Dennis has no doubts, though, that Wilson will still be in charge at Oakwell come August. He said: I have an undying belief in Danny Wilson, just as I have in my football club. I genuinely felt we would be good enough to survive in the Premiership this season, but that has obviously not been the case. Equally I am confident that with the manager we have and the squad of players we are going to try to keep together, we will roll our sleeves up and get stuck in again next season.
I was very heartened by Danny's comments at the weekend. He has handled himself very well all season, which is nothing more than one would expect from him. I will continue to expect him to conduct himself well when there is likely to be a lot of speculation surrounding him and his future this summer.
Wilson himself has revealed his first task will be to try to maintain the nucleus of players he has at Oakwell. Three players - Arjan de Zeeuw, Clint Marcelle and Jovo Bosancic are out-of-contract this summer, while inspirational skipper Neil Redfearn has admitted he wants to stay in the Premiership.
BLACKBURN ROVERS
Roy Hodgson has stayed on the sidelines over the incident which saw goalkeeper Tim Flowers sent off from the substitutes bench in the recent FA Carling Premiership match against Coventry at Highfield Road.
Rovers were reduced to eleven men when Flowers, warming-up on the touchline, was dismissed after directing a volley of abuse at linesman Paul Vosper, who had overruled referee Steve Lodge's original decision not to award a disputed penalty to the Sky Blues. The keeper faces a ban for the opening games of the season to come, and also a possible charge by the Football Association. Hodgson said, Tim has been punished for speaking his mind. I'm not here to defend or condone him.
MEANWHILE Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers have agreed to provide the opposition for Colin Hendry's testimonial match at Blackburn. Scotland skipper Hendry, who has completed 10 years' service with Rovers, hopes to stage the clash next May.
BOLTON
Jimmy Phillips has been handed a testimonial by the Reebok Stadium club. The 32-year-old defender, who scored his first goal in three years when he struck for the Wanderers against Crystal Palace recently, will be honoured for his total of ten years' service to the club.
And Phillips was glowing after waiting for so long to get on the Bolton scoresheet. He explained to Clubcall: I don't often get the opportunity in matches to go up the field. It was one of my best goals... I think I have only scored about five anyway!
Scottish champions-elect Celtic are the side which expected to make the trip south for the match, which is pencilled in for early August.
CHELSEA
The Blues will finally parade the Coca-Cola Cup in front of their fans at goalkeeper Kevin Hitchcock's testimonial match tonight - more than a month after winning the trophy. The parading of the trophy should boost the attendance substantially.
As their 2-0 extra-time Wembley win over Middlesbrough on April 29 came just four days before a European Cup Winners' Cup semi-final against Vicenza in Italy, Chelsea decided to scrap the traditional open-top bus parade. Now the Coca-Cola Cup will be carried around Stamford Bridge on Wednesday by Gianluca Vialli's squad, just before they meet newly-crowned Nationwide League champions Nottingham Forest in Hitchcock's benefit game.
Forest have stepped into the breach after Fulham had to withdraw from the original match due to play-off commitments. Although behind internationals Ed de Goey and Dmitri Kharin in the Chelsea keepers' pecking order now, Hitchcock, 35, has played nearly 300 League games since joining from Mansfield a decade ago for £250,000.
DERBY COUNTY
Deon Burton and Darryl Powell have joined the Reggae Boyz after the Rams' victory at Southampton. The duo have again met up with Jamaica's squad as preparations for the World Cup intensify. But Powell is unlikely to play this week after losing a toe nail at Highbury last week and then straining his groin in training on Friday.
LEEDS
George Graham was disappointed with his team's contribution during the FA Carling Premiership 3-0 defeat at the hands of rivals Manchester United. Leeds have enjoyed a fine season and currently lie fifth in the table and are looking to secure a place in next season's UEFA Cup, but Graham said afterwards: That was probably the worst we've played this season. We had far too many players off form.
''But I've got to look over the season as a whole. We've more or less qualified for Europe and if someone had said at the start of the season that we'd finish in the top six, I'd have been delighted.
He also made it clear that he intends to improve the squad: We've got to have lots of money available and then we need to get quality players.
LEICESTER
Leicester City midfielder Muzzy Izzet has been voted Player of the Year by the club's supporters. Izzet arrived at Filbert Street as a virtual unknown but is now one of the best prospects in the country. His sensational form has led to calls from manager Martin O'Neill for the young Londoner to be rewarded at international level.
MEANWHILE, Foxes defender Pontus Kaamark is looking forward to a much-needed breather when the curtain finally comes down on a gruelling FA Carling Premiership season. This has been arguably the most demanding and physical season I have ever experienced, explained the 29-year-old Swedish international. Back in Sweden the average for a season is about 30 games so I've been very pleased that I have managed the best part of a full campaign.
NEWCASTLE
Greek star Nikos Dabizas hopes he can become a lucky talisman for the Magpies as they attempt to stop League champions Arsenal's charge for the double.
The £2m signing from Olympiakos in February believes he is only now settling to the pace of the English game, and he admits that after scoring his first goal for the club on Saturday he is looking for another in the FA Cup final on May 16. He said: ''I always seem to score important goals. And as far as big games go they do not come any more important than the FA Cup Final. Maybe I could score a goal at Wembley. The most important thing was not that I scored one of our three against Chelsea but that it made us safe and that we are staying up.
PHYSIOTHERAPIST Derek Wright has a couple of new injury worries ahead of the clash against Blackburn on Sunday. Skipper Rob Lee took a kick to his foot on Saturday while Steve Howey is nursing a calf injury but hopes to play in the final. ''I hurt my calf in training and took a kick to it on Saturday. All I can do is allow it to settle down over the next couple of days and hope it will be okay, Howey said.
SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY
Ron Atkinson is poised to line-up former Owls' skipper Nigel Pearson as his number two at Hillsborough.
Pearson, who still lives in the city, has just helped Middlesbrough bounce back into the FA Carling Premiership at the first attempt, but the 34-year-old has announced his retirement from the game due to a recurring knee injury. Pearson summed up his feelings saying: ''I have real passion for the game, but sadly my body cannot keep up!''
Pearson's finest hour in a Wednesday shirt came in 1991 when he led the side to their League Cup success over Manchester United. He spent seven years with the Owls.
SOUTHAMPTON
Dave Jones is close to completing a major signing - one of his own players.
Big defender Richard Dryden is the only first team squad player who is out-of-contract at the end of the season.
Saints had feared that 29 year old Dryden, denied a regular first team place by the consistency of Ken Monkou and Claus Lundekvam, might decide to move on. Monkou and Lundekvam have been Jones' first choices and Dryden has started only 10 FA Carling Premiership matches when they been either injured or suspended.
The former Rangers player feared his future at the Dell was bleak when Jones was prepared to let him go to Crewe on loan. But Dryden turned it down and did enough later to persuade Jones that he was useful squad member.
Jones and Dryden have now agreed the terms of a new contract and Dryden should sign it once the season ends.
WEST HAM
France international Marc Keller predicted another foreign legion joining West Ham after signing a four-year contract at Upton Park. Manager Harry Redknapp took advantage of the Bosman ruling to snap up Keller on a free transfer from German side Karlsruhe.
The midfielder joins compatriot Bernard Lama in the Hammers squad and believes more French stars could follow his footsteps and those of Arsenal's Emmanuel Petit and Patrick Vieira. The 29-year-old said: I think more French players will come here this summer, and of course I know Bernard Lama. He told me all about the club. He had nice things to say and that helped me make up my mind. Also, I still hope West Ham can make it to the UEFA Cup. It will be very good for the image of the club if they can do it.

SCOTTISH ROUND-UP
CELTIC
Scottish title chasers Celtic have lined up a pre-season friendly in honour of Bolton-born defender Jimmy Phillips at the Reebok stadium. The 32-year-old had two spells at Bolton and also played at Glasgow Rangers, Oxford and Middlesbrough. The game is set for Tuesday 4 August.
DUNDEE UNITED
Dundee United's directors do not intend to be forced into any boardroom changes.
The club's fans are upset at the side falling into the relegation area even though they are now safe for another season in the Premier League. An action group called United for Change is holding a news conference to outline their grievances and their proposed moves, but the four-man board have issued a statement which outlines that they will consider ways to strengthen the financial side but there will be no issue of shares.
DUNFERMLINE
Dunfermline were today awarded a £1.5m cash injection from the Scottish Sports Council and the Football Trust helped them redevelop East End Park in time for the new Scottish Premier League. The Fife club, who recently secured their status in the top flight, are to demolish the last standing terraces at a Premier Division ground and develop their east and west stands before the start of next season. Work will begin immediately as the last of this term's home games was completed on Sunday with the Pars holding title-chasing Celtic to a 1-1 draw.
The capacity of each new stand will be 3004 including provision for disabled spectators, bringing the overall capacity to an all-seated 12,500 when completed.
Bert Paton, the Dunfermline manager declared the time was right to bring the club's facility in line with other Premier Division sides. He said: ''It has been well documented about the need to have the new stadium brought up to date. I was involved at St Johnstone when they were building a new stadium there and the lift it gives to the whole community is tremendous. Hopefully the players will respond to that as well and it will become the centre for everyone concerned.''
Gavin Masterton, Dunfermline's vice-chairman, was quick to stress the ground redevelopment will not come at the expense of the first-team squad. This is separate from the football side of the club, he said. We hope with the new Premiership set-up that extra funds from that source can be channelled towards the football side.''
Masterton insisted he is confident work will be completed in readiness for the new season on 1 August, with the opening of the East Stand followed by the West a few weeks later. He added: The timetable's extremely tight, but we've been planning this for 18 months so it's been in place for a long time.
HIBERNIAN
Tom O'Malley has been voted the new chairman of Hibs following Lex Gold's resignation after the club were relegated at the weekend.
Gold stepped down within an hour of Hibs' 2-1 loss to Dundee United at Easter Road which means they will finish bottom of the Premier Division. O'Malley, 61, a director since 1991 and vice-chairman under Gold, will work alongside present owner Sir Tom Farmer. He said: I can tell the fans we will adopt a Premiership attitude, albeit in the First Division - our priority is promotion. We share the sorrow of the fans and everything possible will be done to assist manager Alex McLeish, there will be resources available to him.
ST JOHNSTONE
St Johnstone fans are angry at the number of tickets being made available for their visit to Parkhead to face Celtic.
The club has been allocated only 850 tickets for a game in which Celtic will be bidding to win the Premier League. The fans' spokesman, Jimmy McLeish, who is secretary of the supporters' association, has pointed out out that there are 2,000 season ticket holders and that Saints usually take 1,500 to 2,000 fans to away games.
DIVISION ONE ROUND-UP
BIRMINGHAM CITY
City chairman David Gold will offer Trevor Francis a new two-year deal that would keep him at St. Andrew's until the year 2000, in spite of the rows with Karren Brady and the club just missing out on the play-offs.
Gold said: Trevor has done a super job and we would like to keep him here. I am sure that we will come to a satisfactory conclusion.
MIDDLESBROUGH
Bryan Robson has given teenage full-back Robbie Stockdale a four-year professional contract, saying: Robbie has shown excellent form in the juniors and reserves and impressed in two first team appearances this season. He is among the highly promising youngsters at the club.''
Robson has spent a fortune on big name signings but says he still wants local youngsters to play a big part in the future of the club.
READING
Reading manager Tommy Burns has revealed he is keen to sign Coventry winger Michael O'Neill and Celtic defender Patrick Kelly on a permanent basis. O'Neill, who arrived at Elm Park in February, and Kelly, who joined Reading on transfer deadline day in March, both impressed Burns during their loan spells.
Burns said: Both players did very well, while they were here and I am looking to strengthen my squad in the summer.
WEST BROM
Denis Smith is set to make an announcement on the future of loan duo Paul Beesley and Steve Nicol this week. The experienced pair have impressed after spending the final six weeks of the season on-loan from Manchester City and Sheffield Wednesday respectively. Albion already have a large number of central defenders and that could have a bearing when Smith makes a decision on Beesley.
WOLVES
Former England winger Tony Daley and ex-Poland international Dariusz Kubicki have been given free transfers.
Daley has played fewer than 20 games in four years since Graham Taylor made him the club's £1.3million record signing. He has been plagued by knee trouble and, when he finally returned mid season, he suffered a thigh problem.
Kubicki, signed from Sunderland on a free transfer at the start of the season, has recently been on loan at Tranmere.
Wolves have also given free transfers to youngster Chris Westwood and Richard Leadbeater while delaying decisions on two more out of contract players, Don Goodman and Hans Segers.
Meanwhile Steve Bull has been assured that he still has a role to play at Molineux. Bull has just endured a disappointing campaign after being sidelined for a long spell after knee surgery. But manager Mark McGhee said: The only way that he would leave is if he was to come banging on my door and ask to go.

DIVISION TWO ROUND-UP
WALSALL
Jan Sorensen, sacked as manager of Walsall, has left with a thinly-veiled attack on the club's directors.
The former Danish international was clearly bitter at his treatment after guiding the Midlands club to the fourth round of the FA Cup, fourth round of the Coca-Cola Cup and Southern Area final of the Auto Windscreens Shield. That made the Saddlers an estimated £750,000, but the board still decided to terminate his contract - which had another year to run - after Walsall narrowly avoided relegation.
''I felt I had so much to offer for next season,'' said the 43-year-old, who was only appointed last June. It doesn't mean, however, that my feelings for Walsall and the fans have died, because that is not the case and I take my hat off to the fans for the way they reacted to me on Saturday.
''At least that proved to me they knew what I had achieved in my first season.''
The former Ajax player led Walsall to victory over First Division duo Nottingham Forest and Sheffield United in the Coca-Cola Cup before they lost to West Ham, while Manchester United ended their FA Cup run.
But Sorensen had his two-year contract terminated after Walsall finished only four points and two places above the bottom four. Nevertheless, the Dane wants to stay in football and will be looking for a new managerial job.
WIGAN
Wigan Athletic are offering a one-year contract to 34-year-old defender Rob Newman, who has impressed since joining the club on loan from Norwich in March. But Spanish winger Isidro Diaz has been released for the second time and is looking for another English club.
