FA To Probe Shearer 'Kick'

FA TO HOLD HIGH-LEVEL TALKS
OVER SHEARER-LENNON INCIDENT

FOOTBALL Association chief executive Graham Kelly is expected to call for ‘high-level talks' at Lancaster Gate this week to see if England captain Alan Shearer has a case to answer over allegations that he kicked Leicester 's Neil Lennon in the face.
It is understood that Kelly will meet with senior FA officials - probably on Tuesday - and hold an investigation into the incident during Newcastle's match at Filbert Street last week.
Kelly is determined that the issue will not be swept under the carpet but at the same time he wants to be sure there is no vendetta against the Newcastle striker, who will lead England out in the World Cup finals in France this summer.
Shearer has categorically denied aiming a kick at Lennon and insists it was an accident. The FA have dismissed reports that they have decided to charge Shearer with misconduct following his challenge on Lennon.
FA spokesman Steve Double said: ''It's pure speculation. The case is yet to be considered. The FA will make a decision on the case during the course of next week.''
It had been reported that Shearer will appear before the FA on Tuesday and be given two weeks to answer a charge of misconduct.
After the incident Shearer said: ''I have now seen the television pictures of the incident and I am amazed how bad it looks by comparison to what actually happened.
Shearer later tried to end the controversy but admitted: ''I won't change - and no-one will change me.'' He added: ''I've come in for some criticism over the last few days, but all along I said it was an accident - if you don't believe me ask Neil Lennon himself, he'll tell you it was.
''I wasn't born with the skills of Best or Pele, my game is commitment. I am committed. I've been that all my life.
Lennon has gone on record as saying that Shearer's challenge was awkward but fair and wishes to put the incident behind him. I wish people would forget about it, said the Irishman.

JUSTIN FASHANU DEAD

JUSTIN FASHANU'S fall from grace finally ended at the weekend when the ex-Norwich and Nottingham Forest striker was found dead in East London.
It appears the 37-year-old, once set for super-stardom when he scored a memorable half-volley against Liverpool, committed suicide by hanging himself. Ever since the £1m transfer to Forest in 1981, Fashanu's life was far from good.
While his less-talented younger brother John rose to fame at Wimbledon, Justin slipped from the spotlight, ending up at Leyton Orient in 1989 after ill-fated spells with Southampton, Notts County, West Ham and Brighton.
Sadly his problems did not end there. Having publicly declared he was homosexual, the then-Hearts hitman was involved in a tale of lies and deceit after Tory MP Stephen Milligan's death. The threat of being arrested over claims he slept with Milligan resulted in Fashanu quitting Scotland.
A move to America, and a coaching role at Maryland Mania, went little better and earlier this week he was charged with sexually assaulting a teenager. He fled back to Britain, and his body was found on Saturday.

PREMIER CHIEFS DISMISS
EURO LEAGUE PLANS

REPORTS that Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool are interested in joining a 32-club European Super League, to kick-off in 2002, have been rubbished by the Premier League.
The Sunday papers breathlessly claimed that the three English clubs would continue to play Premiership and FA Cup games but would turn their back on both the Coca-Cola Cup and the existing Champions' League to enjoy the huge cash rewards available on pay-per-view television. Scottish giants Rangers are also included in the Super League blueprint.
But an unimpressed Premier League spokesman said: ''This sounds like the re-run of an old and discredited story. We have lost count of the number of times that people have predicted such a league, it seems like fanciful speculation. I don't think a Super League is an issue and it's not something our clubs are pushing for.''
How the proposed Super League would line-up:
DIVISION ONE: AC Milan, Ajax, Arsenal, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Galatasaray, Inter Milan, Juventus, Manchester United, Monaco, Paris St Germain, Porto, PSV Eindhoven, Real Madrid, Rosenborg.
DIVISION TWO: Anderlecht, Atletico Madrid, Benfica, Brondby, Feyenoord, IFK Gothenberg, Lazio, Liverpool, Marseille, Olympiakos, Parma, Rangers, Rapid Vienna, Slavia Prague, Standard Liege, Steau Bucharest.
