Suriname, in northeast South
America, comprises a swampy
coastal plain, a forested
central plateau, and southern
mountains. The climate is
tropical, with heavy rainfall.
Rice and sugar are farmed on
the coastal plains, but the
mining of bauxite is what the
economy depends on. This makes
up 80% of exports. Suriname
has resources of oil and
timber, but these are so far
underexploited.
