============================== PARAGUAY ============================== Paraguay, landlocked in central South America, is bordered by Bolivia, Brazil and Argentina. The climate is tropical, with abundant rain and a short dry season. The River Paraguay splits the country into the Chaco, a flat semi-arid plain of huge meat- exporting cattle ranches on the west, and a partly forested undulating fertile plateau on the east where almost 95% of the population live. Crops grown on the fertile plains include cassava, sugar cane, maize, cotton and soya beans. The world's largest hydroelectric dam has been built at Itaipu, and cheap power from this has stimulated industry. Summer, January to March, can be very hot and humid with temperatures in the 90's. In winter the average temperature is 70F but can fall to freezing. Abrupt changes are not uncommon, at times falling 20 degrees in 30 minutes. Area (Sq.
