============================== GUYANA ============================== Guyana, situated on the northeast coast of South America, is intersected by many rivers, and the coastal area comprises tidal marshes and mangrove swamps. The jungle in the southwest has potential for the production of minerals, hardwood and hydroelectric power, but 90% of the population live in the coastal areas, where the climate is moderated by sea breezes; here rice is grown, and vast plantations produce sugar. The pleasant capital city of Georgetown was laid out by the Dutch, who placed canals down the middle of wide avenues. Many of the waterways have been filled in, forming tree- lined walks between the streets. The natural beauty of the interior is the country's main attraction, especially the Rupununi savannah, which is an outdoorsman's paradise. Area (Sq.
