the Falkland Islands lie 480km
from South America. Windswept,
virtually treeless, covered
with peat moorland and tussock
grass, the rolling landscape
rises to two points of about
700m - Mount Usborne in East
Falklands and Mount Adam in
West Falklands. Life since
1982 has been based on the
presence of a large British
garrison, but in normal times
the economy is dominated by
sheep-farming.
