    BRITISH SOUTH ATLANTIC

BRITISH ANTARCTIC TERRITORY:

South of 60 degree's south
latitude, comprises mainly the
South Shetland Islands, the
South Orkneys and Graham's
Land.

SAINT HELENA:

An island 1,200 miles off the
west coast of Africa and 1,800
east of South America, has an
area of 47 square miles and a
population of 5,400.

TRISTAN DA CUNHA:

A group of volcanic islands,
total area 40 square miles,
half way between the Cape of
Good Hope and South America.
They have a population of 262.

ASCENSION:

A volcanic island, 34 square
miles in area, 700 miles north
west of Saint Helena. Half its
population of 1,500 are
foreign workers.

SOUTH GEORGIA and SOUTH
SANDWICH ISLAND:

Lying to the east of the
Falkland Islands they ceased
to be Falklands dependencies
in 1985, though they are still
administered via Stanley. They
have had no permanent
population since the closure
of the whaling station at
Leith in 1966.
