============================== ARGENTINA ============================== Argentina, the world's eighth largest country, stretches from the Tropic of Capricorn to Cape Hope on the southern tip of the South American continent. To the west a massive mountain chain, the Andes, forms the border with Chile. The climate ranges from warm temperate over the Pampas in the central region, to a more arid climate in the north and west, while in the extreme south conditions although also dry are much cooler. A series of military regimes has resulted in an unstable economy. Avoid July if you can, when month long school holidays overcrowd popular resort areas. January is the other traditional holiday period for Argentines, the peak of their summer, so accommodations are especially crowded both at the beaches and inland resorts. Buenos Aires: Anytime is good for travelling to the ~City of Good Air~. Rain falls throughout the year. Humid summer temperatures (December to February) can reach over 100F on occasions. Winters are cold, blowy and often frosty. Iguaza Falls: Year round rain so luck dictates two weeks of rain or a dry month or two. Summer temperatures (January to February) in the high 90's with winters down to 10F. The best time to visit is August to October, when temperatures are lower and the orchids are at their peak. Northwest Colonial Region: On the dry, eastern slopes of the Andes are deserts, high plains, and grand canyons. Summer days are blazing hot with cool nights. Winters are snowy and chilly. The rainy period is December to March, averaging 7 inches per month. Patagonia: The Alpine lake district has three times more moisture than the Amazon, mostly from May to July. Skiing from July to September, hunting from March to mid-April and trout fishing from November to April. The coastal deserts where whale watching cruises begin in July and continue until November.
