It is a mountainous country with a ridge of volcanoes running parallel to the Pacific coast. It has a tropical climate. The Pacific slopes of the mountains are exceptionally well watered and fertile, and it is here that most of the population are settled. Coffee growing on the lower slopes dominates the economy. Muggers are often well armed. Armed attacks on public buses are common and guerrilla attacks on military and economic targets occasionally occur. Travel alone, especially at night is not advised. Travel to more remote areas, such as Peten, should be taken with care and local advice should be sought before leaving main towns. On arrival at La Aurora International Airport, avoid unregistered taxis. Visitors travelling overland into Mexico should take the coastal route through Tecun Uman, avoid the La Mesilla crossing into Chiapas, where the situation remains tense.
