It is bounded north and east by Honduras and has a Pacific coast to the south. Two volcanic ranges run from east to west across the country. It is predominantly agricultural, and 32% of the land is used for crops such as coffee, cotton, maize, beans, rice and sorghum, and a slightly smaller area is used for grazing cattle, pigs, sheep and goats. A number of people have been murdered in the course of robberies, especially where they resist. Travellers may be robbed whether in private or public transport, on main roads or in towns. Travel after dark should be avoided. The worst areas are the Pan-American Highway, around Santa Ana in the west, the road from San Salvador to the Pacific Coast beach areas and to the east and west of La Libertad. Outbreaks of cholera occur periodically. Latest information is available from the British Embassy (Tel: 298-1763/69 or 298-1455). For more information ring: Foreign Office Travel Unit 0171-270-4129
