============================== MOTORING ABROAD ============================== If you take the car on a foreign trip, remember each country has different traffic laws and administrative rules. The AA and RAC offer advice for drivers taking the car abroad. It includes: Local laws and speed limits as well as Compulsory equipment. The RAC European Motoring Guide (£3.50) and the AA Motoring on the Continent are available from each organisation and bookshops. When driving on the continent, all countries require you to have a GB Sticker. Most countries also expect you to carry a warning triangle and recommend you adjust your headlights for driving on the right. European countries also have different rules regarding carrying children in front seats. Remember - always check before you go. Some European countries have motorway tolls. The main one are: France: 600 miles for about £35. Spain: 300 miles about £26. Portugal: 150 miles for £8 Italy: 300 miles about £12. Toll booths DO NOT accept travellers cheques but some do take credit cards. Unleaded petrol is widely available on the continent and unleaded pumps are usually marked green or green-striped. But remember, in some parts of Europe unleaded is not so widely available: Italy: look for Super Senza which is sparse in the south. Norway: look for Blyfri which is sparse in the north. Portugal: look for Sem Chumbo usually on main routes. Spain: look for Sin Plomo again on main routes. It's the motorist's nightmare: breaking down or crashing when driving abroad. Breaking down or having an accident abroad without the right insurance, equipment or documentation is a nightmare. Before leaving, you must always: have your car checked or serviced, get proper insurance cover, find out documents and information needed for the countries you will be visiting, find out what essential equipment you must take to these countries.
