Most of Slovenia is situated in the spectacular Karst Plateau and in the scenic Julian Alps. Although farming and livestock raising are the chief occupations, Slovenia is very industrialized and urbanized. Iron, steel and aluminium are produced, and mineral resources include oil, coal and murcury. Tourism is an important industry. The northeast of the republic is famous for its wine production.
