============================== FINLAND ============================== Finland lies in northern Europe, with the Russian Federation to the east and the Gulf of Bothnia to the west. Most of it is low-lying except for the north, which rises to over 1000m in Lapland. It is covered by extensive forests and thousands of lakes. Winter is severe and summer is short. It is largely self-sufficient in food and produces surpluses of dairy produce. Most crops are grown in the southwest. In the north, reindeer are herded and forests yield much timber for export. Major industries are timber products, wood pulp and paper, and machinery and shipbuilding. Area (Sq.
