============================== CANARY ISLANDS ============================== A Spanish autonomous region comprising of seven large islands and numerous small volcanic islands situated off southern Morocco, the nearest within 100km of the mainland. The Canaries offer a wonderful all year round climate. Area (Sq. Beaches: The black volcanic sandy beaches are mainly in the south. In the north Puerto de la Cruz has a magnificent seafront Lido. Food: Tasty 'tapas' (bite size snacks) are to be found in many bars and of course 'sangria' to drink. Shopping: A Duty free zone, particularly good for electronic goods. Always shop around before you buy - and on occasion be prepared to haggle. Nightlife: Nightclubs and casinos in most area's. If you're feeling really energetic try Playa de las Americas. FUERTEVENTURA Beaches: Good sandy beaches all round the island. Food: Good local fish dishes and 'tapas'. Shopping: Although Duty free there is not the quantities found on the more developed Islands. Nightlife: Mainly revolves around the hotels themselves. GRAN CANARIA Beaches: Head south to the Maspalomas dunes for the best beaches. Food: Fresh fish dishes with a glass or two of local wine. Shopping: Well stocked Duty free shops plus local embroidery, weaving and ceramics. Nightlife: No shortage of restaurants, bars and nightclubs here - with enough choice for even the most determined partygoer. LANZAROTE Beaches: Large stretches of fine sandy beaches, but some of the more remote ones are best explored by jeep. Food: Local caught fish dishes washed down with particularly generous cocktails. Shopping: Good Duty free selection as well as leather goods and basketware.
