It declared independence from the USSR in 1991. It is a landlocked Transcaucasian republic, and its neighbours are Turkey, Iran, Georgia and Azerbaijan. The country is very mountainous with many peaks over 3000m. Agriculture is mixed in the lowland areas. Mining of copper, zinc and lead is important, and industrial development is increasing.
