============================== TAJIKISTAN ============================== Tajikistan, a republic of southern central former USSR, declared itself independent in 1991. More than half the country lies over 3000m. Most of the country is desert or semi-desert, and pastoral farming of cattle, sheep, horses and goats is important. The lowland areas are irrigated so that cotton, mulberry trees, fruit, wheat and vegetables can be grown. The republic is rich in deposits of coal, lead, zinc, oil and uranium, which is now being exploited. Area (Sq.
