island lying south of the
Indian peninsula. The climate
is equatorial, but it is
affected by both the northeast
and southwest monsoons.
Agriculture engages 47% of the
work force, and the main crops
are rice, tea, rubber and
coconuts. Amongst the chief
minerals mined and exported
are precious and semiprecious
stones. The main industries
are food, tobacco, textiles,
clothing, chemicals and
plastics.
