============================== MYANMAR ============================== (formerly Burma) The Union of Myanmar is the second largest country in South-East Asia. Its heartland is the valley and delta of the Irrawaddy. The north and west of the country are mountainous, and in the east the Shan Plateau runs along the border with Thailand. The climate is mainly tropical monsoon. Rice is the staple food and accounts for half the export earnings. Myanmar is rich in timber and minerals although not yet fully exploited. Area (Sq. Access is not allowed to large parts of the country because of the actual or potential security problems, and no attempt should be made to enter such areas. Overland entry (allowed at various points on the Chine/Thailand border) does not allow access to main tourist areas. Many avoid using the internal air service because of its poor record. Visitors should not photograph military installations or personnel. Credit cards and travellers cheques are not widely accepted.
