Most of Mongolia is mountainous. In the south there are grass-covered steppes and the desert wastes of the Gobi. The climate is very extreme and dry. For six months the temperatures are below freezing. Mongolia has had a traditional nomadic pastoral economy for centuries, and cereals including fodder crops are grown on a large scale on state farms.
