============================== IRAQ ============================== Iraq is located in southwest Asia, wedged between The Gulf and Syria. It is almost landlocked except for its outlet to The Gulf at Shatt al Arab. Its two great rivers, the Tigris and the Euphrates, flow from the northwest into The Gulf at this point. The climate is arid with very hot summers and cold winters. The high mountains on the border with Turkey are snow covered for six months of the year, and desert in the southwest covers nearly half the country. The only fertile land in Iraq is in the basins of the Tigris and Euphrates, where dates, wheat, barley, rice, tobacco and cotton are grown. Iraq attacked and overran Kuwait in 1990 which resulted in the United Nations imposing a ban on all trade. Although UN forces regained Kuwait in 1991 the trade sanctions have remained in force.
