============================== CYPRUS ============================== Cyprus is an island which lies in the eastern Mediterranean. It has a long thin panhandle and is divided from west to east by two parallel ranges of mountains, which are separated by a wide central plain open to the sea at either end. It has very hot dry summers and warm damp winters. This contributes towards the great variety of crops grown on the island. Fishing is a significant industry, but above all the island depends on visitors, and it is the tourist industry which has led to a recovery in the economy since 1974. In 1974 Turkish forces occupied the north. The island was unofficially partitioned, the northern 40% being proclaimed the 'Turkish Cypriot Federated State'. Area (Sq.
