============================== TRISTAN DA CUNHA ============================== Tristan da Cunha is the largest of four scattered islands towards the southern end of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a volcanic cone of 2,060m, ringed by a lava plain that drops steeply to the sea; a narrow strip of flat ground accommodates the settlement of about 300 inhabitants. The climate is mild and damp with frequent storms; the islanders grow potatoes and rear sheep and cattle for their own use. The Nightingale and Inaccessible Islands are small, uninhabited islands nearby; Gough Island, 400km to the south-east, is a steep, craggy, forest-covered island some 13km long; its only settlement is a weather- station.
