============================== SUDAN ============================== Sudan, the largest country in Africa, covers much of the upper Nile basin. The climate is tropical, and temperatures are high throughout the year. Rainfall increases in amount from north to south, the northern areas being virtually desert. Sudan is an agricultural country, subsistence farming accounting for 80% of production. Cotton is farmed commercially and accounts for about two-thirds of Sudan's exports. Sudan is the world's greatest source of gum arabic, used in medicines and inks. Area (Sq. Desert travel should only be attempted by those fully equipped and experienced. British Nationals are strongly advised not to visit to Southern Sudan (Bhar el Ghazal, Equatoria or Upper Nile), where a civil war has been fought since 1983, and to seek advice from the British Embassy in Khartoum (Tel: 70760) before heading to the neighbouring provinces of Blue Nile, White Nile, Southern Kardofan and Darfur. The ferry route between Egypt and Sudan at Wadi Halfa has been suspended. There is no alternative overland route between Egypt and Sudan. Those attempting to cross the Egyptian/Sudanese border elsewhere have been subjected to heavy penalties, including imprisionment.
