============================== CHAD ============================== Chad, a landlocked country in the centre of northern Africa, extends from the edge of the equatorial forests in the south to the middle of the Sahara Desert in the north. It lies more than 1600km from the nearest coast. In the far north of the country, the Tibesti Mountains rise from the desert sands to heights of more than 3000m. The southern part of Chad is the most densely populated and its relatively well-watered savanna has always been the country's most arable region. Recently, however, even here the rains have failed.
