============================== AZORES ============================== Part of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, the Azores are nine large and several small islands situated about 1,200km west of Lisbon. They divide into three widely separate groups: Sao Miguel and Santa Maria are the most easterly, 160km to the north-west is the central cluster of Terceira, Graciosa, Sao Jorge, Pico and Faial; another 240km to the north-west are Flores and the most isolated significant island of Corvo. Well watered with an equable, temperate climate and fertile soils, the Azores export fruit, wine and canned fish, but tourism is an increasingly important sector of the economy. Area (Sq.
