THE FIRST TRIUMVIRATE
                         
Caesar returned to Rome in 60BC after successful victories in Spain.
Together with Pompey and Crassus, the three men ruled Rome with semi-
dictatorial powers. Caesar set about the conquest of Gaul in 58BC and
completed this in 50BC. In 55BC he launched an abortive invasion of 
Britain.
