OLYMPIC GAMES Olympia was an ancient Greek sanctuary and the scene of the original Olympic games, first recorded in 776BC. It contained temples of Zeus Olympius, Hera and other gods. The Games were held in the Hippodrome and the Stadium and consisted of foot-races, boxing, wrestling,chariot amd horse racing. The games were held, as today, every four years. Women were forbidden to be present and the games were open only to men of pure Hellene descent until in later years when Romans were admitted also.
