ALEXANDER THE GREAT (356BC to 323BC) Alexander became King of Macedonia and is famed as the conqueror and overthrower of the vast Persian Empire and one of the greatest military strategists of all time. His father Philip was murdered in 336 and Alexander succeeded him to the throne of Macedon (north of Greece). He capture Thebes abd supressed uprisings in Greece and then in 334 crossed the Dardanelles for his canmpaign against the Persians. He won three major victories against the last persian king, Darius at Granicus,Issus and finally annihalated the Persians at the Battle of Arbela in 331BC. On his route he established a number of cities named after him, the most famous being Alexandria in Egypt. In 328 he invaded India but his men tirde and worn out refused to go any further and Alexander headed back through his now vast empire for home. However he died of fever in Babylon on the return leaving no successor.
