TRANSVAAL The Transvaal was settled by Boers from Cape Colony. After subduing the Zulus they set up a republic recognized by Britain as independent from 1852. Owing to trouble with the Zulus, the Transvaal was annexed by Britain in 1877. In 1882, the Boers rebelled and defeated the British at the Battle of Majuba Hill. After the Boer War ended in 1902, the Transvaal became a British colony.
