KARL MARX
(1818 - 1883)

German-Jewish philosopher and socialist born at Treves. In 1844 he began a
lifelong collaboration with Frederick Engels and together they developed
Marxist philosophy. He joined the Communist League and together with Engels
published the "Communist Manifesto" in 1848. He settled in London in 1849
and published Das Kapital in 1867.In 1864 he helped form the International
Working Men's Association, an early Communist grouping.
