LUDDITES

Name given to those taking part in the wrecking of machines in riots between
the years 1811-1816. The movement was primarily a revolt against the
unemployment caused by the Industrial Revolution and was mostly in the North
and Midlands of England. Many Luddites were hanged or transported.
