VICTOR HUGO (1802 - 1885) Victor Marie Hugo, French poet,novelist and dramatist. He was the son of one of Napoleon's generals. He established himself as the leader of France's Romantic Movement with the verse play Hernani. He was banished from France in 1851 for opposing Louis Napoleon's coup d'etat and settled in Guernsey,returning to France in 1870.
