GENERAL GORDON (1833-1885) British General who joined the Royal Engineers in 1852, and served in both the Crimean and Chinese War of 1860. In 1864 he went to Egypt and in 1877 became the Governor of the Sudan. In 1884, he was besieged by the fanatical army of the Mahdi in Khartoum and after a seige of 10 months, Khartoum fell and Gordon was slain.
