CHARLES DICKENS (1812-1870) Bristih Novelist born in Portsea. The son of a clerk he received little education and his father was constantly being imprisoned for debt.He became a reporter for the Morning Chronicle to which he contributed the Sketches by Boz. He travelled and lectured extensively, and he had a sharp social conscience and this is reflected in many of his works especially Hard Times amongst others.
