AMERICAN CIVIL WAR (1861-65) Fourteen southern states seceded from the Union over the issues of States Rights and Slavery. The south was badly outnumbered by the North and also lacked it's industrial might. However superior Southern generalship and the high quality and individualism made the Union's task of destroying the Southern rebellion a difficult task, although in the end the South surrendered.
